About us:
Your Trusted Guide to the Greater Bay Area: Settle with Confidence, Not Confusion!

We are a 100% non-profit, volunteer-run organization founded by individuals who have personally faced the challenges while relocating to the Greater Bay Area. We established this platform because we have seen too many overseas Chinese and returnees from Hong Kong and Macao become easy targets for dishonest businesses due to unfamiliarity with the mainland system, leading to financial loss and frustration.

Our mission is to create a pure, impartial, and reliable information hub to empower your move:

* Practical Life Guides: Unfiltered insights and "pitfall-avoidance" tips on living, policy, and culture.

* Transparent Market Prices: Access to real-time data on property rents, purchase prices, and local cost of living to help you budget accurately and avoid overcharging.

* Vetted Service Providers: We leverage community feedback and on-the-ground knowledge to connect you with reputable and fair-priced vendors across various industries—from renovation and healthcare to setting up utilities.

Our Goal: To clear the information fog and be your trusted partner, ensuring your transition to the Greater Bay Area is secure, informed, and peaceful.

Initially, we knew nothing about the mainland. Later, through buying a home, renovating it, and adapting to various aspects of daily life, we spent a great deal of time learning and getting acquainted with the environment. While the process was generally smooth and pleasant, there were also challenges and setbacks along the way! Renovation, in particular, was an area full of potential pitfalls. As overseas Chinese, we were unfamiliar with local market prices and could only turn to YouTube to find real estate agents and renovation companies. However, most locals on the mainland are neither familiar with nor use YouTube. The agencies and renovation teams advertising on YouTube specifically target Hong Kong, Macau and overseas Chinese clients. These businesses are well aware that overseas Chinese are unfamiliar with the mainland's renovation market and pricing, creating a lucrative opportunity for unscrupulous operators. Do not impulsively sign a contract just because the staff from the agency or renovation company are friendly and showcase numerous renovation case studies. Not only do they often quote exorbitant prices (for bare unit renovations, even without requests for imported high-end materials, they may demand at least ¥3,000 per square meter or more—nearly double the local market rate), but the quality of work, materials used, and completion timelines may also not match what was promised. Even if the service meets the standards, if the cost far exceeds the market price, it is an "unfair transaction" targeting informationally disadvantaged groups! As outsiders, we are accustomed to the consumption levels and patterns of our original place of residence. When we first arrive, it is difficult to quickly grasp the local market prices. Renovation companies take advantage of this information gap, treating us as "easy prey" and quoting prices that are double or even higher than the market rate! What is even more concerning is that with the increasing number of people from Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas moving to mainland China in recent years, many renovation companies have identified this business opportunity and specifically target non-local customers by inflating their quotes. Even if we compare different companies, without access to the renovation resources that locals actually use, we may mistakenly believe that these inflated prices are the normal market rates!  Therefore, through resource recommendations, lifestyle tips, shared experiences, and cautionary tales on this website and other platforms, we hope to provide reminders and assistance to overseas Chinese who consider relocating to the Greater Bay Area!

Many overseas Chinese who want to move to the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong need to find some honest and reliable professionals and merchants. Indeed, it is not easy to find merchants with professional knowledge and ethical conduct, but also with reasonable fees.  Merchants listed on this website include renovation companies, renting houses and hotels, buying houses, custom cabinet companies, door and window companies, furniture stores, electrical appliance stores, curtain stores, lighting stores, car repair shops, building inspection services, mattress shops, optical shops, dental clinics, nursing homes, mobile phone companies and Wi-Fi providers, etc.  Some of them had been hired and recommended by our group members, and some are introduced by our local friends. These merchants have many years of experience in the industry, have good reputation, provide good quality service and charge reasonable fees. However, you still need to shop around yourselves and choose merchants that are suitable for you and have high cost-effectiveness.

The merchants recommended on this website are for reference only. You need to consider carefully before deciding whether to buy their products or hire their services. You are responsible for your own decision! If you have any opinions about services or conduct of these merchants, you are welcome to email us and let us know. After investigation and confirmation, we will consider removing them from listing on this website. If you have any praise for their services, you may also let us know. In addition, you are welcome to recommend professionals and merchants who have provided you with good services and reasonable fees. We will consider listing them on this website after we get to know them and their service quality assurance. We also welcome professionals and merchants to introduce themselves to us by emailing us.

A fair and healthy consumer environment can only be sustained in the long run through the contributions of every one of us.  We encourage friends in the Greater Bay Area to share your valuable experiences and pool our collective strength for mutual support. This will help those preparing to relocate to the mainland avoid unnecessary detours and integrate into life in the Greater Bay Area with greater peace of mind. Interested friends are welcome to contact us at: info@baliving.org
